Most “RevOps audits” are just CRM cleanups

Here’s an uncomfortable claim: most of what gets sold as a “RevOps audit” is a CRM cleanup with a better invoice. Someone deduplicates your records, tidies your fields, maybe rebuilds a few reports, and calls it a diagnosis. It’s useful housekeeping. It is not an audit, and confusing the two costs you the actual problem.

The difference

A cleanup fixes the state of your data. An audit finds where your revenue leaks. Those overlap — dirty data hides leaks — but they are not the same job, and one does not deliver the other.

You can have immaculate data and still lose forty enquiries a month to a routing rule that matches no one. You can have perfect field completion and a handoff where sales silently re-qualifies everything marketing sends. Cleanup won’t surface either, because neither is a data problem. They’re process problems that happen to live in a system.

Why the cleanup gets sold instead

Because it’s easier to scope and easier to show. Deduplication produces a satisfying before-and-after. “We found the point where your best leads fall out of the funnel” requires actually following the money through the process, which is harder and less photogenic.

What a real audit does

It traces the path revenue takes — from first touch to closed won and beyond — and finds the specific points where intent leaks out. Unrouted segments. Broken handoff definitions. Stages that mean different things to different people. Attribution that flatters one channel and buries another. Then it quantifies the cost of each leak, so you know what to fix first.

The output isn’t a cleaner CRM. It’s a ranked list of where you’re losing pipeline and what it’s worth to stop.

The honest counterpoint

Sometimes a cleanup is exactly what you need — if your data is genuinely the bottleneck, tidy it first. But don’t mistake the tidy-up for the diagnosis. Ask any provider a simple question: will this tell me where I’m leaking pipeline, or just make my database neater? The answer sorts the audits from the cleanups.

That’s the line the Pipeline Leak Audit is built on — fixed fee, fixed scope, aimed at the leak, not the mess around it. If you want a taste first, book a 30-minute health check.
