RevOps isn’t a tool you buy

Here’s the claim: RevOps is not something you can buy. There is no platform, however good, that installs the discipline for you. RevOps is a way of running revenue — shared definitions, clean handoffs, trustworthy data, aligned incentives — and every one of those is work, not a licence. Treat it as a purchase and you’ll own the tools and still have the problems.

Where the confusion comes from

The market is full of things called “RevOps platforms”, and vendors are only too happy to imply that buying one makes you operationally sound. It’s an appealing shortcut: install the system, become a company that has its act together. But the tool is the easy 10%. The 90% that actually determines whether revenue leaks — whether marketing and sales agree what “qualified” means, whether the handoff has an owner, whether anyone trusts the numbers — none of that ships in a box.

What RevOps actually is

It’s the operating discipline that makes the whole revenue engine coherent. Definitions that both teams share. Handoffs that don’t drop leads. Data clean enough to decide on. Incentives that point the same way. Reporting people believe. These are agreements and habits, maintained by people, reviewed as the business changes. A tool can support them; it cannot supply them.

It is common for a company to buy the platform, run the implementation, and still lose a chunk of pipeline at a handoff nobody owns — because the platform automates a broken agreement rather than fixing it. The logo on the software changed nothing about who was accountable for the unassigned queue.

The honest counterpoint

Tools absolutely matter. Good RevOps is much harder on bad tooling, and the right platform removes real friction. The point isn’t that tools are useless — it’s that they’re necessary and nowhere near sufficient. Buying the tool without doing the discipline is spending money to feel like you’ve solved a problem you haven’t touched.

What to do instead

Do the unglamorous work first. Agree the definitions. Give the handoff an owner. Clean the data enough to trust it. Align the incentives. Then buy the tool that supports the discipline you’ve actually built — not the tool you hope will build it for you.
