Six signs your lead scoring is being ignored

Lead scoring rarely gets formally abandoned. It gets quietly ignored — reps stop letting it drive their day and fall back on gut and territory lists. Here are six signs it’s already happening, whatever the dashboard says.

1. Reps work leads out of score order

If your team picks up low-scoring leads before high-scoring ones, they’ve privately decided the score doesn’t predict. Watch what they actually do, not what the model recommends.

2. “Sales-ready” leads bounce straight back

When a steady stream of MQLs gets rejected or recycled the moment sales looks at them, the threshold is mis-set or the signals are wrong. The score is saying ready; the reps are saying no.

3. Reps ask for the raw list instead

If your best people bypass the scored view and ask for the unfiltered lead list so they can judge for themselves, that’s a vote of no confidence you can’t miss.

4. High scores don’t convert better than low ones

The decisive test. If you check and high-scoring leads don’t close at a meaningfully better rate than low-scoring ones, the model isn’t predictive — it’s decoration, and reps have noticed even if ops hasn’t.

5. Nobody’s touched the model in a year

A scoring model reflects a business at a moment in time. If yours hasn’t been revisited since launch while the business moved on, it’s quietly drifted out of accuracy — and stale scores lose trust fast.

6. Marketing and sales argue about the score itself

When the model becomes the subject of the blame conversation rather than a shared tool, it’s already failed as a point of agreement. A trusted score is invisible; a distrusted one is a battleground.

What ignored scoring costs

An ignored model doesn’t just waste the build effort. It still labels leads “sales-ready”, so it actively misdirects anyone who does follow it, and it corrupts every funnel metric that depends on the MQL count. A dead model isn’t neutral — it’s a source of noise.

The fix is always the same: rebuild on evidence from won deals, separate fit from engagement, set the threshold with sales, and validate quarterly.
