A sales handoff is the point at which a lead or deal passes from one owner to the next — marketing to sales, an SDR to an account executive, sales to customer success. It sounds like a routine transfer. It’s actually the single highest-risk moment in your funnel, because every change of ownership is a chance for context, speed, and accountability to be lost.
How it works
A handoff has three parts, and all three have to hold. Something moves — the lead or deal itself. Context moves with it — who this is, what they want, what’s already happened. And accountability moves — a clear new owner who knows the lead is now theirs. Drop any one and the handoff leaks: the lead transfers but the context doesn’t, or nobody’s clearly responsible, or it moves too slowly to matter.
Why it’s the riskiest point in the funnel
Within a stage, one team owns the lead and the incentives are clear. At a handoff, ownership is momentarily ambiguous — the sending side considers its job done, the receiving side hasn’t started, and in that gap leads sit unassigned, un-notified, or un-actioned. It’s precisely why pipeline leaks in the handoff, not the CRM. The failure isn’t in the work either team does; it’s in the seam between them that neither team owns.
What a good handoff looks like
A clean handoff transfers the lead, its full context, and clear ownership, fast — with a shared definition of what qualifies for handoff, an SLA on how quickly the receiver acts, and a reconciled view so nothing falls into the gap unseen. When those are in place, the transfer is invisible. When they’re not, it’s your biggest source of quiet loss.
The common mistake
Treating the handoff as an event rather than a designed process. Teams obsess over lead generation and deal closing — the parts each team owns — and leave the transfer between them to chance. The handoff is where the cheapest recoverable pipeline lives, precisely because it’s the part nobody’s paid to watch.
